Fall into Film; 11 Autumn Movies for those Cozy, Hot Chocolate and a Blanket Days

Against a backdrop of Autumn leaves, snow covered landscapes, roaring fireplaces, ice-skating rinks and beautiful countryside, enjoy 90s classics, beautiful Disney movies, period dramas and classic comedies. Here are my favourite films of Autumn to give you that warm, cosy feeling as you hide under a furry blanket and drink some hot chocolate (or mulled wine if you're in our house!).

The Cutting Edge

The Cutting Edge movie collage starring Moira Kelly and DB Sweeney as Winter Olympic Figure Skaters. 90s teen movie with lots of 90s fashionA 90s classic that doesn't age. Full of energy, vivid characters and excellent performances by all involved. Moira Kelly plays Kate, Olympic figure skating hopeful with a bossy, demanding work ethic that drives her skating partners away. D.B. Sweeney is the hockey star whose career is cut short before it even starts when he's smacked in the eye with a puck. Together, they try to overcome their mutual dislike to get to the winter olympics and win the gold all against a backdrop of snow, 90s power dressing and some wonderful workout wear from Moira Kelly. I also love the music and the youthful edge to their relationship that keeps Doug and Kate from being too grown up. I could watch this over and over and over.....and I will.

Cool Runnings

Cool Runnings Disney 90s sports movie starring John Candy. Inspired by the true story of the Jamaican Bobsleigh team with lots of brightly coloured 90s fashion. Feelgood Autumn movie.

The snow, the colouful 90s outfits, John Candy, the beautiful city of Calgary, the team, the heart and the comedy; I absolutely adore this movie, I feel all warm and fuzzy inside just thinking about it. All the warm and idealised shots of Jamaica alogside the cosiness of knitwear, scarves and  powerful, beautiful relationships give Cool Runnings a guaranteed spot on any favourite films list. And, of course, it's absolutely hilarious!

Brother Bear

Disney's Brother Bear. Animated film, not pixar, Disney Classics. Autumn movies.

Another film full of cosy autumnal colours and big, furry coats, this is Disney's romantic postcard of nature with the requisite ditzy sidekicks, steep learning curve, catchy tunes and of course, magic. If you've never seen Brother Bear, I highly recommend it, it speaks to our most basic human desires and encourages us to put ourselves in someone else's shoes. It also shows off Disney's best animation skills of recent years; reminding us that we don't need Pixar to see superior and magnificent  Disney artwork reminiscent of the very best Disney Classics.

Gilmore Girls

Gilmore Girls collage. Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel playing Lorelai and Rory Gilmore along with the rest of the cast including Scott Patterson as Luke Danes and Melissa Mccarthy as Sookie St James. Autum tv show.

Ok, not a movie but come on, is there any other show or movie anywhere that serves as a more effective ode to Autumn? Fans of the show don't need me to tell you that this is the ultimate feelgood watch, those of you yet to discover it, it isn't too late, you're in for a treat...

How to Marry a Millionaire

Screenshot from how to marry a millionaire starring Betty Grable, Lauren Bacall and Marylin Monroe. Betty Grable on a ski slope kissing in the snow. Romantic winter couple.

I give this honorable mention for Betty Grable's storyline in that ski lodge; all that driving around among snow covered mountains and pine forests whilst looking fabulous of course. A wonderful, light-hearted look at a woman's role in a bygone era. From the strong and authoritative Lauren Bacall to the friendly and outgoing Betty Grable and, of course, the ditzyness and incomparable beauty of Marilyn Monroe.

Easy Virtue

Movie Collage of Easy Virtue starring Jessica Biel, Kristin Scott Thomas, Ben Barnes and Colin Firth. British period comedy drama by Noel Coward set in the british countryside. 1920s 1930s setting, excellent autumn/fall movie.
A wonderful Noel Coward adaptation full of wit, wisdom and some of the most fabulous styling as modelled by the beautiful Jessica Biel. I'm so glad I got to see this on the cinema; wide sweeping shots of stately homes, grounds and British countryside with that early morning mist hanging just above the grass that makes us feel so happy we're inside where it's nice and warm. Of course, as a Noel Coward story it's utterly classy, funny and original. The characters are absurdly real, the storyline full of energy, twists and turns and an accurate reflection of life that doesn't take itself too seriously. Coward really was the master and I hope we get many many more adaptations of his excellent art for years to come.

Easy Virture movie collage, sweeping outdoor shots of early morning mist and frost in the british countryside. English country house and surrounding grounds. adaptation of Noel Coward play

Of course it's also the law in England that Colin Firth star in anything period or vintage-y and he gives a great performance as always.

Gosford Park

Another one for all those anglophiles and Downton Abbey lovers who love that idealistic representation of England's old money, aristocratic lifestyle. An absolutely stellar cast - Dumbledore II (Michael Gambon), Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance), The Dowager Countess of Grantham (Dame Maggie Smith), The Queen (Dame Helen Mirren), Jeeves (Stephen Fry) etc etc etc etc. Two Dames, excellent writing and a storyline that's halfway between farce, murder mystery and documentary.

Movie collage of Gosford park starring Dame Maggie Smith, Kristisn Scott Thomas, Charles Dance, Michael Gambon, Clive Owen, Stephen Fry, Richard E Grant and Ryan Philippe. Period murder muystery drama set in the 1930s. Statley home and British aristocracy setting great form anglophiles.

Follow the aristocracy as they do what they do best in the country - follow their own agenda and nuts to everyone else.... in the most charming, tongue-in-cheek way of course. Maggie Smith is hilarious in her Dowager Countess kind of way, long before Downton Abbey came along. Dripping with diamonds, sarcasm and country tweeds, period drama doesn't get much better than Gosford Park. (If that isn't enough to tempt you you've also got Richard E Grant, Clive Owen, Ryan Phillippe, Kristin Scott Thomas and Jeremy Northam)

"I'm breaking in a new maid, I'm simply worn out with it, actually, there's nothing more exhausting is there?" - Dame Maggie Smith, Gosford Park

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Perfect Autumn or fall movie starring Daniel Radcliffe, Ian Mckellen, Robbie Coltrane, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and Alan Rickman. Cosy Autumn movie.

There's something about Autumn and Winter, those colder, darker nights drawing in that makes us feel ever so nostalgic, it's back to school time and what could be more nostalgic that going right back to the beginning of our favourite boy-wizard franchise? Re-meeting characters for the first time,  walking alongside Harry as he discovers all the mysteries of this magical world, meeting the teachers, visiting Ollivander's and hating Malfoy all over again. This is all helped, of course, by the music, the cosy, dorky little outfits, firelight and candles everywhere and that warm golden tint placed over the entire film.

Chocolat

Chocolat movie adapted from Joanne Harris' book starring Jonny Depp, Juliette Binoche and Dame Judi Dench. Warm and yummy movie poster, lots of chocolate in France.

The Chocolate, the scenery, Juliette Binoche's on point hairstyling and Jonny Depp at his absolute hottest - everything about this movie  is 'Delicious'. If you've never read the novel of the same name, get thee to a library immediately and find it! Just like Harry Potter, this film has that warm, golden, firelit-from-within filter that makes every shot look cosy and nostalgic. The characters are warm and varied, and old Hollywood fans will love seeing Lesley Caron back on our screens in all her charismatic glory. A big storyline in a small French town, escape to Lansquenent sous Tannes and don't forget to have some yummily, decadent chocolate on hand - because you'll definitely need it. This film is chocolate porn!

Chalet Girl

Chalet Girl movie poster starring Felicity Jones and Ed westwick, Chuck /bass from Gossip girl. Great Autumn and wnter sports movie about skiing and snow boarding. Also starring Tamsin Egerton and Bill Bailey.

If you're ever thought about going on a ski holiday, this movie will rekindle your wanderlust! Picturesque sweeping shots of gleaming snow covered mountains and the over the top, vogue like outfits of the rich girls will make you want to dress up in a Russian hat and get to the nearest lodge for hot chocolate and fairy lights.

When Harry Met Sally

When Harry met Sally starring Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal in central park surrounded by autumn leaves and fall colours. Classic Autumn winter movie for cosy nights in.

No Autumn movies list would be complete without this one; all those rich, warm shots of central park in Autumn,  piles of gold, red and mahogany coloured leaves everywhere and Meg Ryan's cosy outfits. Even all these years later, even to those of us who didn't live through the 80s, this movie still resonates and doesn't date.

Harry and Sally spend years alternating between acting as cheerleaders and critics! I love the male/female back and forth as they analyse why men/women behave as they do, both defending it and criticising. It's funny, light-hearted, meaningful and original. I only watched it for the first time a year ago and I loved it.

What would be on your 'cosy-film' list? These are my favourite types of films and if you can think of anything I might like share it below, I'd love to discover a new movie!

Ciao for now
